HR Consulting Case Study – EC English

The Brief


True North were engaged by leading English language education company EC English to help them develop a tailored performance management training programme to be delivered to all line managers operating in ten modern schools across four countries over three continents.


The Challenge


EC English was growing rapidly both organically and through acquisition and, with their commitment to providing high quality, innovative English language courses, there was a requirement for a consistent approach to management training. As the business moved towards a SMARTER objective setting, linked to an annual bonus, it was crucial to implement an objective and consistent performance management training to its staff. The programme needed to be tailored to EC English’s existing culture and remain consistent across all locations and school. As line managers would commit to a maximum of half a day, the training also needed to be dynamic and engaging. The aim was to deliver to c20 people in UK and c40 people in Malta with a view to replicating the programme to US staff.


The Solution


True North began by reviewing the current appraisal delivery and performance management training through exploratory conversations and face-to-face interviews with line managers. Initial diagnostic work also included benchmarking the current training programme to agree Best Practice performance management training.


The results of these discovery interviews helped develop the framework for a new training course, which included how employees are appraised and what competencies they are measured against, a bonus structure and details of what is regarded as good performance.


True North delivered a bespoke, culturally relevant training programme which line managers to confidently set SMART objectives and deliver performance feedback. It provided branded training collateral to retain within the EC HR library that could be rolled out across new regions and schools as the business continued its aggressive growth plans. The programme also created a competency-based interview process, educating line managers to deliver consistent decisions when hiring staff and to ensure cultural fit in a fast growing environment.
