HR Consulting Case Study – BME

The Brief


The British Music Experience (BME) was a permanent exhibition and museum in London, opened in 2009 to rave reviews, showcasing the history of rock and pop music in the 20th century. Unfortunately the BME was due to close down and all existing employees were put at risk of redundancy. True North were approached by the HR Team at the BME to support with managing this process through outplacement coaching and training to help the impacted employees to ensure that they were best placed to find another job and support their career development after the closure of the BME.


The Challenge


The majority of staff had been at the BME since the opening and there was a strong emotional attachment to the business and the product. In addition, many of the affected employees had never (or not for many years) interviewed or had to look for a job, consequently, there was a degree of fear and inexperience for the at risk employees. Furthermore, there was some resistance to the situation; hence True North came in as a neutral partner and mediator to help facilitate the change process.


The Solution


True North designed and delivered an interactive workshop to all at risk employees, on site at the BME. This workshop consisted of a variety of exercises and information and activities with the aim of upskilling the audience in relation to the skills they would need to successfully and confidently enter the job market. There were sessions on CV writing, job searching and interviewing tips and techniques. After a full, engaging and interactive workshop, there was already a noticeable difference in both engagement levels of the affected individuals as well as confidence levels. In addition to the workshop, we ran 1:1 coaching sessions for each of the at risk employees drilling down into their individual CVs, in terms of presentation and content, as well as supporting them on their job hunt and potential future options and transferable skills.


The outcome was that all employees who went through the programme were much better placed in finding alternative employment and were better placed for the future.
